D'après le site officiel de Stephen King,le recueil de nouvelles, One Headlight, titre d'une chanson des Wallflowers, devrait paraître publié aux Etats-Unis chez Simon & Schuster en 2003.

Le recueil de nouvelles One Headlight, qui comprendrait une douzaine de nouvelles, dont les 5 nouvelles de Six Stories (recueil édité en tirage réduit en 1997. Ne serait pas reprise la nouvelle Blind Willie, déjà parue dans Hearts in Atlantis) , auxquelles viendraient s'ajouter d'autres nouvelles comme Space Invaders et Cat from the Hell, qui a son histoire.

Une première publication de Cat from the Hell - un passage de 1500 mots - a eu lieu dans le cadre d'un concours invitant les lecteurs de Cavalier à compléter l'histoire. Les versions gagnantes ont été publiées, avec l'histoire complète de King, dans le # de juin 1977 de Cavalier. Il y eut de nombreuses rééditions de la nouvelle dans des anthologies aux USA [dont Year's finest Fantasy (1978 et 1979), Magicats! (1984) et l' anthologie d'Ellen Datlow ( Twist of the tale : Cat horror stories (1996).

Un court métrage en avait été tiré, Contes de la nuit noire (Tales from the Dark Side, 1990) d'après le scénario de King. Signalé par Alain SPRAUEL <Alain.Sprauel@gazdefrance.com>

Merci à Christophe (immele@wanadoo.fr) de m'avoir signalé la publication récente dans l'anthologie Contes du chat pervers (octobre 1999) de la nouvelle Le chat venu de l'enfer (16 pages)]. C'est l' anthologie d'Ellen Datlow ( Twist of the tale : Cat horror stories (1996) qui vient d'être traduite. Elle comporte 23 nouvelles, une courte introduction sur le chat et une biographie des auteurs, dont plusieurs sont réputés. La nouvelle, plusieurs fois éditées dans des anthologies (Magicats, 1984), est inédite en français.

This book has not been confirmed anywhere but King mentioned it in a letter that was published in the paperback version of Bag Of Bones. There has also been confirmed that on of the books included in King's new 3-book deal will be a collection of short stories.

Le recueil pourrait comprendre d'autres textes :

- Leaf-Peepers, un article de non-fiction, est paru dans le New-Yorker des 28 déc. 1998 et 4 janv. 1999. C'est une brève rêverie sur ces gens qui viennent en Nouvelle-Angleterre à l'automne "pour observer les feuilles changer de couleur, et sur ce qu'ils font du reste de leur temps aussi." (...) "Ça vaut la peine de le dénicher dans une bibliothèque pour le photocopier (ça tient sur une double-page). Cest la quatrième apparition de King dans ce magazine, et la deuxième de suite dans un de leurs hors-séries littéraires." - Authopsy Room 4 (de Six Stories et Robert Bloch's Psychos). One of King's eeriest stories, and a new fan favorite.

- L.T.'s Theory Of Pets (de Six Stories), a live-reading favorite, this funny story is a sure thing.

- Luckey Quarter (de Six Stories),the first of King's odd surrealist stories, a mini-sub-genre King explored in the late 90's.

- The Man In The Black Suite (de Six Stories), Winner of the O. Henry Award, this literary achievement is definite.

- Little Sisters Of Eluria (de Legends) ( Les Petites Soeurs d'Elurie, une novella de La Tour Sombre). Création: 1996. Première publication: 1998 (recueil: Legends, The Book of Fantasie). Édition fr. Légendes, Éditions 84, 1999. Voir mon étude.

- That Feeling, You Can Only Say What It Is In French (published in The New Yorker), Another of the surreal stories that also contains heavy religious imagery, another theme King worked with in the 90's.

- The Road Virus Heads North (de 999) ( trad. fr. Quand l'autovirus met cap au nord (24 pages) est paru en novembre 1999 dans l'anthologie d'Al Sarrantino 999, Le Livre du millénaire des maîtres du fantastique, Albin Michel. Mon opinion.

- The Old Dude's Ticker (Necon X)

- In the Deathroom (de Six Stories) raconte comment un homme prisonnier dans une planque en Amérique du Sud découvre que le tabac n'est pas toujours dangereux pour la santé. C'est la seule histoire de ce recueil enregistrée par King, au printemps dernier.

When this book is eventually published, it might be under a different title though...

Voici ce qu'écrit King à son éditeur Scribner :

"The collection of short stories, I thought, would be the easiest. It would be a little bigger than Night Shift (my first collection) and a little smaller than Skeleton Crew (my second one). I had a bunch of pretty good stories, a few of which had been published in small magazines and quite a few that hadn't been published at all. (Only two, "Everything's Eventual" and "The Man in the Black Suit," had been published in major magazine markets.) I even had a name for this book picked out: One Headlight, after the song by The Wallflowers. It seemed to fit; if writing short stories isn't trying to make it home with one headlight, I don't know what is".
The letter was also published in the US paperback version of "Bag of Bones

Historique.

Jan 14) King's recently-signed 3-book contract includes the novels From a Buick Eight and Cancer, as well as "a short-story collection." Even if it won't eventually be called One Headlight, this collection seems to be what they're talking about. From a Buick Eight will be published first, but no news if Cancer or One Headlight will be next, though. Keep an eye out!

King stated in his afterward to the paperback version of Bag of Bones that when he was planning the short fiction collection between Bones and On Writing, he envisioned a book including a lot of unpublished material, plus some stories that had made magazine appearances. Then, he wrote a story called "Hearts in Atlantis," which eventually led to the linked tales that comprise the upcoming book of the same name.

While he was deliberating on what to include on the collection-to-be, however, King came up with a title: One Headlight, after the Wallflowers song. Do we know what will be in this collection? No. Do we even know if the collection is in the works? We know that production of it has been at the very least postponed. When and if the collection ever does come, will it still have the same title? Probably not. King changed the title of Hearts in Atlantis three times before settling on the current title.
